Eminem Puts 'Southpaw' Flick On Back Burner

'He's focusing on his music right now,' a rep for Detroit MC confirms of delay on boxing movie.

It's been almost 10 years since fans saw Eminem in his first big-time movie role, but they'll have to wait a little bit longer to catch him the second time around.

The rapper has long been signed on to star in "Southpaw," a gritty drama about a boxer who tries to mount a comeback in life and in the ring, but it is now being reported that Em will put the flick on the backburner.

"He's focusing on his music right now, so while he's doing that, while he's in that space, he wanted to put this on hold for the time being," Eminem's rep Dennis Dennehy told the Detroit Free Press this week.

In November Em's "8 Mile" will turn 10 years old. The film was both a commercial and critical success, and while Marshall has gone on to make cameos in 2009's "Funny People" and on the wildly popular HBO series "Entourage," he has yet to return to the big or small screen as a leading man.

The film's original distributor, DreamWorks, shelved the boxing project last August, but in October it was reported that Sony Pictures had picked up the flick, which will be made by MGM and directed by Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day," "Brooklyn's Finest").

The good news is that when the Recovery rapper is ready to dive into production, he won't have to travel far from his native Detroit to do it. "What I'm told is when the film does get made, the plan is that the bulk of it will be shot in Michigan. That was always the understanding," said Dennehy.

Are you looking forward to seeing Eminem on the big screen again? Tell us in the comments!

Sure, it's only 41 seconds long, but there is just something so right about the first clip from Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly" (née "Cogan's Trade"). Miley Cyrus Rushed To Hospital After Blender Mishap

'I'm all stitched up & have on a splint so I'm good,' singer/actress tweets after the incident.
By Kara Warner

<P>Miley Cyrus suffered a minor mishap in attempting to channel her inner Rachael Ray on Tuesday (April 17) when she cut her finger while cooking and had to be rushed to the hospital for stitches. Gossip website <a href="http://www.starfeine.com/exclusive-video-and-pix-miley-cyrus-rushes-to-the-emergency-room/">Starfeine</a> broke the news and obtained the photographic evidence via a snapshot of Cyrus headed to the hospital, holding the injured finger wrapped in gauze.</P><P>"She cut her finger while cooking," Cyrus' rep told <a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/miley-cyrus-rushed-to-hospital-to-get-stitches-on-finger-2012174" target="_blank"><i>Us Weekly.</i></a> "[She] had to get a few stitches. She's doing fine."</P><P>Cyrus later tweeted an update about the incident via a back-and-forth Twitter conversation with fan site <a href="http://mileycyrus.bz/" target="_blank">MileyCyrus.bz</a> and let everyone know she was doing fine, aside from being peeved that paparazzi followed her to the hospital.</P><P>"@MileyCyrusBz as you can tell by the horrible faces I'm making I obviously didn't know they were there," Cyrus <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/MileyCyrus/status/192356412125487104">tweeted</a> in response to the paparazzi shots. "Pretty messed up following me to ER. I'm all stitched up &amp; have on a splint so I'm good," she added via a follow-up <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/MileyCyrus/status/192356668254851072" target="_blank">tweet</a>. "As you can tell by my expression, didn't feel so good. Curse u blender!"</P><P>We're not exactly sure what Cyrus was doing sticking her hands into a blender, but we're happy she's all stitched up and on the mend.</P><P>Starfeine claimed the 19-year-old singer/actress was accompanied by a substantial support team on her trip to the emergency room. Her mother, grandmother and boyfriend Liam Hemsworth were reportedly all by her side during the ER visit.</P><P><i>Share your get-well wishes for Miley in the comments below!</i></P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

Will Black Keys Team Up With Ke$ha? First They Want Jim Nabors

The duo sat down with MTV News in Berlin to discuss a pair of unlikely collaborations.
By James Montgomery

<P>Theirs is a relationship that has spanned time and Twitter, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/77286418598211584" target="_blank">seafood</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/157523381602889728" target="_blank">shaving</a>, but over the years, the unlikely bond between the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_keys/artist.jhtml">Black Keys</a> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/id_3213641/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> has grown to become something <i>more</i>: a genuine friendship, marked with the occasional trespassing charge.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Would The Black Keys Ever Collaborate With Ke$ha?" id="vid:731631.id:1678505" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>"We're friends with her, we've known her since way before she was famous, before she was even a singer, I guess," Keys drummer Patrick Carney told MTV News. "When she was 16 years old, she used to sneak into our shows. We kind of became friends with her by kicking her out of our backstage room, over and over again. She actually has snuck into shows in L.A., San Diego, Coachella ..."</P><P>"She snuck in and [got] kicked out of one show, like, <i>five</i> times," frontman Dan Auerbach added. "[She] snuck in through the kitchen. I don't know if she's such a big fan; she just likes breaking the rules."</P><P>So, when MTV News sat down with the 'Keys in Berlin during the premiere of their <a href="/news/articles/1678662/black-keys-gold-on-the-ceiling-music-video.jhtml">"Gold on the Ceiling"</a> video, we had to ask if their friendship with Ke$ha would take the next step: an actual musical collaboration. It's not all that far-fetched, considering both Ke$h and Auerbach live in Nashville ("I see her every once in a while flying by in her T-Top [convertible]," Auerbach laughed), and recently, the glittery one has logged studio time with <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/keshasuxx/status/160846424609787906" target="_blank">the Flaming Lips</a>. So, could we see a team-up on the next Black Keys album?</P><P>"I guess, I don't know," Carney said. "We don't really do that many collaborations, really."</P><P>OK, so if a Ke$ha collabo isn't in the cards, just who would the 'Keys like to work with next? Well, as it turns out, they've got their eyes set on landing a very big star for the next record ... even if they mistakenly believe he's deceased.</P><P>"We both want to work with Jim Nabors very badly, but apparently he's not with us anymore," Carney said. Oh, <a href="http://www.jimnabors.com/" target="_blank">but he is.</a> Which means that, much like Nabors, the dream is alive. The Ke$ha collabo? Eh, probably not so much.</P><P><i>Should the Black Keys hit the studio with Ke$ha? Leave your comment below!</i></p>

Dimmu Borgir Release Live DVD; Plus Led Zeppelin, Brujeria, &amp; More News That Rules, In Metal File

'It shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums,' guitarist says.
By Chris Harris

<P>On October 14, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/borgir_dimmu/artist.jhtml">Dimmu Borgir</a>Dimmu Borgir &#8212; who just happen to be <a href="/news/articles/1593780/demi-lovato-metalhead-metal-file.jhtml">Demi Lovato's favorite black-metal band</a> &#8212; will release a a three-disc DVD/CD set called "The Invaluable Darkness," the band's first visual offering since 2002's "World Misanthropy." Boasting live footage shot last year, during gigs in Norway, Germany and England, "The Invaluable Darkness" demonstrates the unbridled furor of seeing Dimmu live, guitarist Silenoz said.</P><P>"It shows the honest rawness and atmospheric darkness of our concerts," the Norwegian told <i>Metal File</i> last week, after <a href="/news/articles/1596201/this-moment-make-dream-reality-metal-file.jhtml">dismissing recent online rumors that his band's next LP would be coming out through Roadrunner Records</a>. "Basically, it shows the intense live side of the band, as opposed to the perfection and the cleanness of how we sound on our albums. It's just a different side to the band, basically."</P><P>Dimmu Borgir began thinking about "The Invaluable Darkness" two years ago, but didn't start capturing footage until last summer, Silenoz explained, adding that the band will use its current stint on the Blackest of the Black Tour &#8212; which got underway Thursday night in Miami Beach, Florida, and also features the tour's founder, Danzig, along with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/moonspell/artist.jhtml">Moonspell</a>Moonspell, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/winds_of_plague/artist.jhtml">Winds of Plague</a>Winds of Plague and Skeletonwitch &#8212; to promote the DVD. Dimmu Borgir will not, however, use the tour to write material for their next LP.</P><P>"It's our first time on Blackest, but Glenn [Danzig] had wanted to bring us out before [on the tour], but we weren't available until now," Silenoz said. "We've done Ozzfest before, but we're looking forward to this tour more. We did the main stage on Ozzfest, playing in f--_ing broad daylight. This tour will let us play in bigger places, but at the same time showcase more of what the band's about, visually. We are going to concentrate on the tour for now. Some years ago, we tried putting [material] together on the road, but once we got home, we listened back to it, and were like, 'What the f--- <i>is</i> this?' So, we just scrapped it all. We find it's so much better to totally focus on one thing at a time, and then, when that's over, you move on to the next [thing]. We don't really feel like we need to rush things, anyway, so we'll just take our time, and it's going to be what it's going to be."</P><P>Dimmu Borgir hope to reconvene in late December to begin writing the follow-up to 2007's diabolically titled <i>In Sorte Diaboli.</i> "We have some ideas floating around already, but we haven't arranged any material yet," he said. "We'll start doing that once the touring for this DVD is over." The band's frontman, Shagrath, is also due to marry soon &#8212; he's engaged to actor Nicolas Cage's ex-girlfriend, Christina Fulton, so that may have an effect on when Dimmu finish their next album, which Silenoz said could be out this coming spring.</P><P>"I'm sure [Shagrath] won't let anything get in the way [of] the band &#8212; I think, I hope," the guitarist said. "We don't need a Yoko [Ono] situation."</P><P>While Dimmu have been at it going on 15 years now, Silenoz said he doesn't think their forthcoming material will be much of a departure from their previous black-metal offerings.</P><P>"And we have always been about more than just that term, 'black metal,' " he said. "Luckily for us, the older you get, the less concerned you get with the categorization and putting labels on your music. Things start getting more and more limitless with us, and we know that we operate within certain frames. But we try not to analyze things too much, because it's just going to be working against you in the end. When we write new stuff, we don't think about what we should write &#8212; we just get together, and put material together, and if we like it, we keep it. That's the formula, if we even have a formula."</P><P>Dimmu Borgir are definitely getting older &#8212; guitarist Galder will be missing Blackest because of a recent addition to his family, and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/susperia/artist.jhtml">Susperia's</a>Susperia's Cyrus will be filling in for him; while former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/vader/artist.jhtml">Vader</a>Vader drummer Dariusz Brzozowski takes over for Hellhammer, who had to leave the band in 2007 after sustaining a neck injury that's now limited the use of his right arm. As Dimmu has gotten on in years, Silenoz admits they have failed to keep pace with some of the more extreme black-metal acts that have followed in their wake.</P><P>"We helped open doors for the more extreme bands out there," Silenoz said. "I'm sure we helped open doors for bands like Watain, [insomuch as] people that had maybe started listening to us first then went on to the more extreme stuff. Let's face it &#8212; we're not as extreme as Watain and other bands like that, but we're fine with that."</P><P>The Blackest of the Black Tour continues through November 10 in San Francisco.</P><P>The rest of the week's metal news:</P><P>Dimmu's tourmates on Blackest, <b>Winds of Plague</b>, have announced ex-<b>Azusa</b> drummer <b>Art Cruz</b> has joined their ranks &#8212; he replaced <b>Jeff Tenney</b>. According to the band's blog, "Art has already added a new spark to the band and has provided us with a solid backbone that will allow us to continue our rampage stronger than ever." ...</P><P>What the world really needs is another <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml"><b>Led Zeppelin</b></a><b>Led Zeppelin</b> box set, so, on November 4, Rhino Records will issue the <i>Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection Mini LP Replica CD</i> box set. For just $200, you'll get 1969's <i>Led Zeppelin,</i> 1969's <i>Led Zeppelin II,</i> 1970's <i>Led Zeppelin III,</i> 1971's <i>Led Zeppelin IV,</i> 1973's <i>Houses of the Holy,</i> 1975's <i>Physical Graffiti,</i> 1976's <i>Presence,</i> 1976's <i>The Song Remains the Same,</i> 1979's <i>In Through the Out Door</i> and 1982's <i>Coda,</i> as mini-LP replicas, with artwork from the original U.K. LP sleeves. Now, you know what you can get your dad for Christmas. ...</P><P>Former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/killswitch_engage/artist.jhtml"><b>Killswitch Engage</b></a><b>Killswitch Engage</b> frontman <b>Jesse Leach</b> and current Killswitch Engage guitarist <b>Adam Dutkiewicz</b> have teamed up for a new project they're calling <b>Times of Grace</b>, and they've already started working on material for their debut album. According to Leach, "We have two songs to go and we will be finished with all of the vocals. Adam has taken lead vocals in three songs as of yet and he is doing a great job. We also worked on a track yesterday that is so epic &#8212; we trade vocals and do two different melodies at the same time. This album went from a melodic metal album to an epic mix of metal/rock/pop/shoegaze and punk. So all of your metal expectations will be incorrect &#8212; we are pushing genre boundaries." To quote "Meet the Parents," we'll look forward to that, Greg. ...</P><P><b>The Funeral Pyre</b> and <b>Early Graves</b> will be hitting the road together next month, starting November 7 in South Lake Tahoe, California. Dates are booked through November 21 in Hollywood. ...</P><P>The latest incarnation of <b>Brujeria</b>, which features <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/carcass/artist.jhtml"><b>Carcass</b></a><b>Carcass</b> frontman <b>Jeff Walker</b> and <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/napalm_death/artist.jhtml"><b>Napalm Death's</b></a><b>Napalm Carcass's</b> <b>Shane Embury</b>, have lined up several U.S. dates for this winter. Tom Gabel Comes Out As Transgender: In Praise Of Bravery

Why the Against Me! singer's decision to live as a woman is also a genuine act of courage, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Tom Gabel of Against Me!
Photo: Getty Images

Tom Gabel probably didn't want to be praised for her decision to come out as transgender; she just wanted to be comfortable in her own body. But I'm going to praise her anyway.

Because when Gabel announced to Rolling Stone on Tuesday that she planned to begin living as a woman — after struggling privately with gender dysphoria for years — it was undoubtedly the most personal thing a major recording artist has ever gone public with, an admission that's sure to make her the target of cruel insults and petty insinuations (to say nothing about what it might mean for the future of her band, Against Me!). But rather than focus on the close-mindedness of a select few, it is certainly more worthwhile — not to mention important — to laud Gabel for what is, in its purest form, a genuine act of bravery.

To be fair, Gabel is not the first musician to come out as transgender. In the 1970s, electronic artist Walter Carlos announced that he, too, suffered from gender dysphoria and underwent sexual reassignment surgery to live life as Wendy Carlos. And just last year, Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo made headlines when he became Mina Caputo. But Gabel's case is different. Since her earliest days, she has always been a punk pariah, criticized for "selling out" at every step of her career.

I got the sense this bothered her on some level (how could it not?), because when I interviewed Gabel in 2006 for AM!'s major-label debut, New Wave, she definitely made mention of it, saying: "There is no pleasing everybody. ... I guarantee our new record will get the same reaction that all our records get. Some will be like 'It's awesome,' and others will be like 'I absolutely hate it.' But fast-forward a few years, and the ones who said they hated it are the ones who say they loved it all along."

It will be interesting to see how Against Me!'s fans — and detractors — react when Gabel begins living life as Laura Jane Grace, because they definitely can't accuse her of selling out anymore. If anything, her decision to begin gender reassignment treatments is the most punk-rock thing imaginable: being true to one's self, being unafraid to be different, speaking out regardless of the repercussions. These are the tenets the genre (and, for what it's worth, way of life) were founded on — and, really, what they should still be about today. If you have a problem with Gabel's decision, you're probably not a punk at all.

In coming out as transgender, Gabel will undoubtedly inspire others to do the same. She is proof that the truth is nothing to be ashamed of, that there is nothing as important — or admirable — as living the life you want to, on your own terms, detractors be damned. And the fact that Gabel's wife, Heather, will remain by her side as she begins this new chapter is not only equally inspiring, but, in the wake of the passage of North Carolina's Amendment 1, which made law that only a "marriage between one man and one woman" would be recognized by the state, it seems even more important. Because truly, is there any greater definition of love — or support, or dedication or unwavering union — than what they share? You can quote biblical verses to deny that fact, but really, you'd be missing the point.

For years, fans like me have marveled at Gabel's pained yet poignant lyrics, with their searing desires to break free and find a place in the world (on the standout New Wave track "The Ocean," Gabel growled, "And if I could have chosen/ I would have been born a woman"). It turns out, it went much deeper than that: Gabel was at war with her own body, and now, finally, she's found the courage to make peace with that conflict. It's beyond admirable; it's downright brave.

Like she told me six years ago, "There is no pleasing everybody." Ultimately, you've got to please yourself. And with courage and conviction, Gabel has done that. No matter how you feel about her new life, you can't deny that it's everyone's basic right to live life on their terms. That goes beyond music or politics or religion: It's humanity, pure and simple.

Although "The Hunger Games" has been out in theaters for well over a month now, the $600 million behemoth is still making headlines via box-office records, a director change-up and casting speculation — not to mention the fact that the crowd-pleaser is set to make a fine showing at our 2012 MTV Movie Awards with its eight nominations.

When MTV News caught up with castmember Elizabeth Banks recently as she promoted her latest movie, "What to Expect When You're Expecting," we asked for an update on the "Catching Fire" casting rumors, as well as her thoughts on new director Francis Lawrence. More specifically, though, is there room in "Fire" for her "Expecting" husband Ben Falcone (of "Bridesmaids" fame)?

"Yes, he's Finnick," Effie Trinket herself joked. "I'm here to announce that he's replacing President Snow."

"Right," agreed Falcone. "Yes."

"You are the new president of the Capitol," she informed her co-star.

"Yes. No thanks, Donald Sutherland," Falcone joked of the actual President Snow.

Getting serious for a second, we then asked Banks what she thinks of Lawrence taking over directorial duties on the film's sequel, "Catching Fire."

"[I'm] very excited. I mean, I can't wait," Banks said. "I haven't met him, but we'll see. I think he's going to do great."

Banks' fellow "Hunger Games" co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth have also weighed in on their new director, echoing Banks' excitement.

"Francis is extremely talented, and everyone I've talked to says he's the best guy in the world," Hutcherson said. "So I think he's going to bring a lot."

Check out everything we've got on "Hunger Games: Catching Fire."

Eminem, Yelawolf Tackle Race, Drugs In New Interview

'As I was listening to his music, I am not even thinking about any of that,' Eminem tells Vibe about working with Yelawolf.
By Rob Markman

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/eminem/artist.jhtml">Eminem</a> wasn't the first-ever white rapper, but when Slim Shady kicked in hip-hop's doors in 1999, he was still an anomaly. In 2011, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/yelawolf/artist.jhtml">Yelawolf</a> doesn't have quite the same difficulty, as the white rapper stigma, for the most part, has subsided. It's a topic that Em and Yela discuss in the December/January issue of <i>Vibe</i> magazine.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Yelawolf Talks About Working With Eminem" id="vid:705816" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>In the magazine's cover story, Eminem tells veteran writer Erik Parker that he and <a href="/news/articles/1655811/eminem-signs-slaughterhouse-yelawolf-shady-records.jhtml">Wolf, who Em signed</a> to Shady Records earlier this year, hardly consider race while in the studio. "We make jokes about it, but I don't think we talk about it in depth," he said. "As I was listening to his music, I am not even thinking about any of that sh--. It's just the music. That's one of the things that's great about it. I'm not even thinking about it when I hear the music."</P><P>They did make light of it in the studio, however. "We do poke fun of it because it's funny. Like, he calls me White Dog," Yela said.</P><P>"Yeah, or Beige Sheep," Em joked.</P><P>Growing up in Alabama, Yela learned a lot about race relations, especially as it pertains to hip-hop culture. And while a rapper like Kreayshawn affiliate V-Nasty may feel comfortable dropping the N-word, Wolf insists that that is a no-no. "[In Alabama] we have a dark history concerning the relationship between black and white people. I'm not a role model by any means, but if I said it around the house, I got popped in the mouth," he said.</P><P>Eminem insists that race is secondary to music. "We deal with it enough as it is. So now, let's make music," Eminem said.</P><P>"Let's make great records. At the end of the day, that's all there is to do," Yela, whose debut album, <i>Radioactive,</i> hits shelves November 21, added.</P><P>When the topic of drugs came up, a clean and sober Em joked that he recently shot heroin, making light of a situation that he had previously taken so seriously. That opened the door for Yela to talk about his own experience with narcotics.</P><P>"I started smoking weed at 11. By 12, I was smoking dust. Thirteen, acid, Freon, Special K, mushrooms; 16 years old, I was selling X pills at school. Not even because I was a good dope boy, but because I was a scumbag," the tatted-up rapper revealed. "It was called chocolate chip, and it had heroin in it. I used to take that sh-- and go to class. I went so heavy into drugs that I had a bad trip one time that lasted for months."</P><P>The December/January <a href="http://www.vibe.com/posts/vibe-cover-reveal-eminem-and-yelawolf-cover-year-end-issue" target="_blank">issue of <i>Vibe</i> magazine</a> hits newsstands nationwide on December 6.</p>
