Taylor Swift, Rihanna Dress To Impress At Billboard Awards

Nicki Minaj, Ke$ha, Selena Gomez also make fashion splash on red carpet, as showgirl style rules at the Las Vegas event on Sunday night.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>On Sunday night, some of the biggest names in the music industry hit up the <a href="/news/articles/1664375/billboard-music-awards-recap-justin-bieber-selena-gomez-kiss.jhtml"><i>Billboard</i> Music Awards</a> in Las Vegas and decided that sparkles and sequins make for the perfect additions to any red carpet get-up. Well, it is Sin City after all. </P><P> </P><P><a href="/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a> always seems to bring some of that Nashville sparkle to any red carpet. She arrived at the show in a pale-hued, sequined Elie Saab gown. <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/minaj__nicki/artist.jhtml">Nicki Minaj</a> showed off her signature sense of style in her baby-blue, body-hugging spandex Mark Fast catsuit. </P><P> </P><P><a href="/music/artist/gomez__selena/artist.jhtml">Selena Gomez</a> turned up the style dial in a sexy, cut-out black Dolce &amp; Gabbana gown that she paired with red strappy sandals with sparkly bow detailing. Like Gomez, <a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> opted for some cut-out detailing in her sparkly, slate-gray dress with tulle skirt. <a href="/music/artist/rihanna/artist.jhtml">Rihanna</a> looked white hot in her men's tailored Max Azria suit, which she kept sexy and feminine by not buttoning her shirt all the way. </P><P> </P><P>Fergie went S&M chic in her little black bandage-type dress by Herv&#233; L&#233;ger. Nicole Kidman also wore black. She paired a casual braid hairstyle with a long black gown and Keith Urban. British pop cutie Kyle Minogue looked funky in her little black lacey dress. Inside the show, Britney Spears sat in the audience wearing a skimpy black dress of her own, her hair in loose curls, with little-to-no accessories. </P><P> </P><P>While some stars kept the color scheme low-key, Keri Hilson decided to stand out in her billowy little yellow dress paired with a turquoise-colored belt. Kelly Rowland showed off some of her best assets in a body-hugging, bright pink bandage dress. </P><P> </P><P>The fellas also looked tight on the carpet. Joe Jonas wore all black with white sneakers, Ne-Yo paired his periwinkle suit with a Yankees cap and Justin Bieber wore black tuxedo pants with a gold-lam&#233; tuxedo jacket. </P><P> </P><P><i>Which stars' styles caught your eye at the </i>Billboard<i> Music Awards? Fun. Ready To Burn Bright At MTV Movie Awards

'It's an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever,' band says of taking the Movie Awards stage on June 3.
By James Montgomery

Given that Fun. are the first musical act announced for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, you'd think they'd be privy to all sorts of insider info on the big show, like potential hosts, nominees, etc. But, you'd be wrong. Turns out, they're just as much in the dark as the rest of us.

"We haven't heard anything. Who's going to be there?" frontman Andrew Ruess laughed. "Jackie Chan? Jon Bon Jovi? They better be there, for sure."

Sadly, we can't vouch for either gentleman's availability on June 3, when the Movie Awards air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. But we can tell you that the guys in Fun. are planning on making the most of their time on stage, by going big with their performance of chart-topping smash "We Are Young."

"It's one of the most flattering things that's happened to us on this rollercoaster ride of this song and this album, because I just remember watching all those award shows — like the Video Music Awards and Movie Awards — and you always wonder like how they're doing it, what their big reveal is going to be, all those other type of things," Ruess said. "We've had meetings about how our set's going to be and what it's going to look like, and it's so exciting. It's so exciting how much effort MTV puts into this show, like, we have to show up and play the song, but they build this whole entire world around us, and it's so amazing."

"It's also an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever," guitarist Jack Antonoff added. "Like, I still talk about [the 2000 VMAs], when Eminem had the thousand people dressed like him, or when Smashing Pumpkins did 'Tonight, Tonight' [at the '96 VMAs] ... these are moments that, for us, growing up, last forever, and if we could pull off something like that, it would be amazing."

And as if being tapped to perform at the 2012 Movie Awards wasn't already a big enough deal for the band, there's also the fact that they've got previous MTV awards-show experience ... though, to be fair, this will be the first time they've actually been invited to attend.

"I went to the Video Music Awards when I was 14. My friend from camp had a friend who had a dad who was involved, and we sat near Rebecca Lobo and the Spice Girls," Antonoff said. "It was the year that Fiona Apple gave the big speech, which, in hindsight, was pretty inspiring. My mind was blown, and I thought 'This is just filled with famous people, and somehow I'm in the middle of it.' So, to be able to go back to an MTV awards show — not through a friend of a friend who has a dad who works at Viacom — but to actually be invited, is an honor."

The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.

'Avengers' Already A Smash Overseas

Superhero movie, due Stateside in early May, is already breaking records in foreign markets.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

The Avengers have already started to assemble overseas, and early box-office reports are spelling very good things for Marvel's tentpole. The superhero movie that brings together Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk has reportedly made $12.5 million in a handful of foreign markets and is already breaking records, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In Australia, "The Avengers" has already banked $7 million, a total that has only been beaten by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," which earned $8 million during its Down Under debut.

The foreign rollout has proven lucrative elsewhere, too, as France added $3 million to the total.

Early tracking estimated that "The Avengers" could make more than $150 million during its early May opening weekend in the U.S. That would put the film in the same class as "Spider-Man 3," "The Hunger Games," "The Dark Knight" and "Deathly Hallows, Part 2."

This could potentially mean the biggest debut for a Marvel Studios movie yet. "Iron Man 2" currently holds that honor. The Robert Downey Jr. sequel opened to $128 million back in 2010. That's followed by the first "Iron Man" at $98 million.

"The Avengers" has the added advantage of higher ticket prices. The film is playing both in 3-D and in IMAX 3-D, so each individual ticket will add more to the final total. "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" saw a large bump in its record-breaking run thanks in part to higher prices attached to 3-D showings.

Check out everything we've got on "The Avengers."

Rihanna Teases 'Badass' Role In 'Battleship'

'We did training just before the shoot, speeding the boat, turning, learning how to shoot and handle the weapon,' singer-turned-actress tells MTV.

There are only a few more hours until Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker will hit our airwaves for "MTV First: 'Battleship' " to premiere an exclusive clip from their buzzworthy summer blockbuster. In the meantime, we are happy to hold you eager fans over with a snippet from our interview with Rihanna about the film.

"I wanted to do something badass but I didn't imagine it would be grungy, like straight Navy soldier, no makeup," Rihanna said of her expectations for her first movie role. "I enjoyed it. We did training just before the shoot, speeding the boat, turning, learning how to shoot and handle the weapon, and two hours later we were shooting that scene."

The "Talk That Talk" singer has received nothing but rave reviews for her work in the film.

"She was great," director Peter Berg told MTV News of Rihanna's acting chops. "She has a very strong part. I was surprised no one had ever thought to hire Rihanna," he added. "I was a huge fan of her videos. Obviously she's sexy, but she had this real intensity. I'm like, 'Someone's going to get her.'

"When I met with her, she came in a T-shirt and jeans, no makeup, very natural," Berg recalled. "She was like, 'Look, I want to be an actress. Don't kiss my ass. Don't lie to me. Push me. Treat me as you would any other actor. Help make me good.' She is really, really good in 'Battleship.' "

Don't forget to tune in to MTV on MTV tonight at 7:56 p.m. ET to watch the premiere of the exclusive "Battleship" clip, followed by 30 minutes of Q&A with the film's stars on MTV.com, hosted by MTV News' Josh Horowitz. Fans can get in on the action by submitting video or text questions via MTV.com or via Twitter using @MTVNews, hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskBattleship.

Lil Wayne, Usher Help Romeo Santos 'Revolutionize' Bachata Music

'It was the first time you hear an artist from the mainstream singing bachata,' former Aventura frontman tells MTV News of single 'Promise.'
By Christina Garibaldi

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/romeo_santos/artist.jhtml">Romeo Santos</a>, the former lead singer of the popular bachata group <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/aventura/artist.jhtml">Aventura</a>, has taken a new step in his career, venturing out on his own as a solo artist. Mixing his signature bachata flair with some R&B, he is showing fans a whole new side on his debut album, <i>Formula, Vol. 1.</i> </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Romeo Breaks Into Mainstream With Lil Wayne" id="vid:734074" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Hoping to spread his unique sound and style to a mainstream audience, Santos enlisted <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lil_wayne/artist.jhtml">Lil Wayne</a> for his latest single, "All Aboard." </P><P> </P><P>"This song 'All Aboard,' that tune allowed me to expand and kind of offer my audience something totally different because it's not bachata &#8212; I'm singing English and that was really fun," Santos recently told MTV News. "I was a little nervous about that, but people actually really accepted it." </P><P> </P><P>Santos and Weezy recently shot the video for "All Aboard" in Miami; he called the clip "sexy," "seductive" and "elegant," but also revealed that this collaboration came very close to not making his album. </P><P> </P><P>"I was just like, I like the song but it's missing something, and at first I couldn't figure out what it was," Santos said. "What we did was we left 16 bars open, and I was like, you know, who would rip this track? Lil Wayne. So we reached out. It barely made the album because he's a busy dude, so he actually got on the record two months after we submitted it. It was like, if we don't get his vocals in the next two days we hit, and we got it, so we made it and the song is just really great." </P><P> </P><P>Wayne isn't the only artist Santos pulled in for his album. On his last single, "Promise," he teamed up with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a>, who last week joined him onstage at <a href="/news/articles/1678993/romeo-santos-solo-tour.jhtml">Santos' first of three sold-out shows</a> at New York's Madison Square Garden. </P><P> </P><P>"I felt at that moment once again I was going to revolutionize bachata 'cause it was the first time that you hear an artist from the mainstream singing bachata," Santos said. "It was a big deal." </P><P> </P><P><i>What do you think of Romeo Santos' solo debut? Let us know in the comments.</i></p>

Lady Gaga Taps The Darkness To Open Born This Way Ball

Re-formed British rock band 'honoured' to serve as openers on European leg of Gaga's tour, which kicks off August 14 in Bulgaria.
By James Montgomery

<P>Perhaps looking for some <i>actual</i> Heavy Metal Lovers, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> has tapped reunited British rockers <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/darkness/artist.jhtml">the Darkness</a> as the opening act on the first &#8212; though we're willing to bet not <i>last</i> &#8212; leg of her <i>Born This Way</i> Ball, which kicks off August 14 in Sofia, Bulgaria. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed> </P><P> </P><P>The Darkness confirmed the news Tuesday morning (April 10) on their official site (which, in a <i>very</i> Darkness move, is called <a href="http://www.theactualdarkness.com/home/" target="_blank">TheActualDarkness.com</a>), writing that they were "honoured [British spelling, extra classy] to announce their addition to the bill as main support for Lady Gaga's <i>Born This Way</i> Ball tour 2012." </P><P> </P><P>The glammy, hammy rockers &#8212; best known for theatrical hits like "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" and "Growing on Me" &#8212; <a href="/news/articles/1484374/darkness-believe-in-a-thing-called-touring.jhtml">burned bright before imploding in 2006</a>, but announced a reunion (and plans for a new album) just last year. And as a way of kickstarting the next chapter of their career, frontman Justin Hawkins appeared in a well-received Samsung commercial that aired during Super Bowl XLV, in which he starred as a Spandex-clad pied piper who rescued folks from the monotony of everyday life. So, you know, it was basically a documentary. </P><P> </P><P>It's not clear if the Darkness will serve as the opening act on <i>all</i> of Gaga's Euro dates (a spokesperson for the band did not respond to MTV News' request for comment by press time), but, thanks to the Mother Monster herself, we now know that there <i>are</i> European dates for the much-discussed <i>BTW</i> Ball. </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://twitpic.com/97zvzf" target="_blank">Gaga unveiled the first 21 shows</a> early Tuesday morning on her Twitter account. After kicking off August 14 in Bulgaria, she'll make stops in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Germany, France and the U.K. before wrapping October 6 in Barcelona. </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

Usher, Lil Wayne Mark Justin Bieber's Birthday

'Happy birthday, slime. You in the club,' Weezy tells Biebs in birthday video compiled by MTV News.
By Rob Markman

<P>When it's your 18th birthday, you'll probably get well wishes from mom, dad, and, if you're lucky, your teenage crush. But when you're <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>, you get shouts from Usher, Lil Wayne and Sean Kingston. Be jealous! </P><P> </P><P>On Thursday (March 1), the Biebs turned 18 years old, and his most famous friends hooked up with MTV News to celebrate <a href="/news/articles/1680191/justin-bieber-birthday-fan-questions.jhtml">Bieber's birthday</a>. "I hope that you are around all of your loved ones and having a good time. This is from big bro, from the heart," Usher said in a video piece compiled by MTV News for the Biebs. </P><P> </P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><iframe src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:744682/cp~id%3D1680192%26vid%3D744682%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A744682" width="420" height="236" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div> </P><P> </P><P>The <i>Confessions</i> singer initially signed Justin along with his manager Scooter Braun, and he has since become a mentor to the pop star. So of course the 33-year-old Usher had to impart some b-day wisdom on his young homey. "Eighteen will give you an opportunity to do a little bit, not all, so we got a few more years before you can go all the way," he said, acknowledging the three years until JB turns 21 and is allowed to legally drink in the U.S. "Maybe I might even be able to sneak you into a club. Anyway dawg, happy birthday. I love you." </P><P> </P><P>Comedian Kevin Hart isn't buying all of Justin's birthday hype, though. "Whatever Justin Bieber is supposed to be doing at 18, he was doing at 15," he joked after sending his well wish. </P><P> </P><P>Platinum hitmakers RedFoo, B.o.B, Sean Kingston and Flo Rida all helped MTV News celebrate the occasion. Even <a href="/news/articles/1678337/justin-bieber-lil-wayne-studio-visit.jhtml">Lil Wayne, who was with Bieber</a> in the studio in February, sent a special message. "Happy Birthday, slime, the big one-eight. You in the club, slime," Weezy said, standing beside Young Money's Lil Chuckee. </P><P> </P><P>As far as birthday presents go, it's anybody's guess what his buddies will actually get Bieber. But Robin Thicke bypassed tradition and instead hit up the "Never Say Never" singer for a loan. "Send me some money, Justin. You got way too much," he said, laughing. </P><P> </P><P>But what do you get the young man who has everything? Sometimes all it takes is a few kind words. "Thank you to all the people that made the video," Bieber told MTV News. "It really brought a smile to my face." </P><P> </P><P><i>Leave your own birthday message for Justin Bieber in our comments section!</i> </P><P> </P><P><b>Happy 18th birthday, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>! Now that we've counted down the superstar's <a href="/news/articles/1680195/justin-bieber-18th-birthday-top-moment.jhtml">18 greatest moments</a>, stick with MTV News as we celebrate the milestone all day.</b></p>

What do airline CEOs pack when they travel?

by Rachel Sang-hee Han

Enough repurchasing USB adaptors and phone chargers because you keep forgetting to pack them. The key to packing smart is knowing what you really need.

We asked some of the most frequent fliers in the world -- airline CEOs -- about their favorite picks to pack.

iPad: Temel Kotil, CEO, Turkish Airlines

The ultimate travel, entertainment, business companion. It really depends on the style of the traveler -- reader, film buff, game addict -- but it can all come down to the trusty iPad.

"Most trips I take are quite long, generally five hours or more and the two things I make sure I have with me are a book and my iPad," says Temel Kotil, 53, of Turkish Airlines.

"While I enjoy the in-flight entertainment provided and often watch a number of movies, the uninterrupted time while in the air provides a quiet period for reading and listening to music that is found in few other places.

Pauly D Getting His 'Beast' On With Label Boss 50 Cent

'Pauly D Project' star tells MTV News he is taking his time with debut album because he 'really wants it to be great.'

<P>Pauly D is hard at work, making the kind of bold career moves that should help him keep his star status strong long after his days in Seaside Heights are behind him. The <a href="http://www.mtv.com/shows/jersey_shore/season_5/series.jhtml">"Jersey Shore"</a> breakout has been cataloging his exploits on his new spin-off, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/shows/pauly_d_project/series.jhtml">"The Pauly D Project,"</a> which follows the star as he travels the world with his crew as an in-demand DJ and continues to pursue a recording career. </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1675288/pauly-d-50-cent-signing.jhtml">Pauly signed with 50 Cent's G-Note record label</a> late last year and reportedly got right to work. 'Five-Year Engagement' Cast Reveals How They Keep Composure

Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and Alison Brie share with MTV News cures for avoiding on-set laughter: 'I just think of really dark, morbid stuff.'
By Kara Warner

Whenever a movie features a very talented cast of actors who are also great comedians, it's easy to assume that many laughs and bloopers occurred during filming. Take the upcoming romantic comedy "Five-Year Engagement" for example, which boasts the very funny ensemble of writer/actor Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, Alison Brie ("Community") and Chris Pratt ("Parks and Recreation") to name a few.

When MTV News sat down with the cast to talk about the film recently, we asked how they keep their cool to avoid ruining a scene when a castmember does something particularly amusing.

"I have a lot of experience trying not to break on the set of 'Community' working with a lot of funny people," Alison Brie explained. "I consider it a personal challenge when working with Ken Jeong to not break in scenes with him, and he's ridiculously funny, so I had that under my belt."

Regarding her methods for maintaining a straight face, Brie said, "I just stay in character — professional! Look, I just think of really dark, morbid stuff. I don't want to tell you; it's going to make you depressed."

Segel revealed he learned his lesson early in his career: "I'm terrified of breaking, because Judd Apatow screamed at me once when I was very young on 'Freaks and Geeks.' I was laughing, and I was young, and looking back, he was just trying to scare me, but he said, 'Every time you break, it costs me thousands of dollars!' And since then, I'm terrified of breaking."

Blunt blames "nervous energy" for her on-set laughter. "I laugh at everything," she shared. "I found myself laughing at my grandfather's funeral because I had that nervous energy, and you don't know how to cope. I think the more pressure I'm under from the cast and crew not to laugh, the better I do."

Check out everything we've got on "Five-Year Engagement."

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Trailer: Five Kick-Ass Moments

Duke goes early and so does London in the brand-new trailer for 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation,' from 'Never Say Never' director Jon Chu.
By Josh Wigler

Crashing through the sky comes the fearful cry of Cobra, but I feel no fear at the laser-blasting terrorist organization's coming arrival. For one, we all know the Joes have this battle in the bag. For another, there's a second "G.I. Joe" movie heading our way in just two short months, and by the looks of it, it's the movie that fans have always wanted. Bring on Zartan, Firefly and the rest of them, I say!

Cobra Commander and his minions are out in full force in the brand-new "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" trailer that arrived Tuesday (April 24) courtesy of Machinima. Featuring an introduction from leading man Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the two-and-a-half-minute trailer embraces everything we loved about that first "Retaliation" spot and ups the ante considerably. Keep reading for the five scenes from the trailer we were most excited to see.

The Duke of Hazard
"Just don't kill Duke. That's really my only request," MTV.com reader Adam wrote in response to the arrival of the first "Retaliation" trailer some months ago. Unfortunately, Adam, I don't think your wish will be granted: Rumors have long been swirling about the early exit of Channing Tatum's "Rise of Cobra" hero, and his limited appearance in the "Retaliation" trailer only fuels that fire further. If there's a silver lining, it's that Duke appears to have grown among the Joe crowd quite a bit since last we saw him. He's got a strong relationship with Roadblock, so much so that he happily volunteers to babysit his fellow Joe's little girls for a weekend. Duke might not last long in "Retaliation," but expect his departure — however it comes — to weigh heavily on Roadblock as the film unfolds.

The Country Is at War
There's only one man who could destroy G.I. Joe in one crushing move, and the Rock voted for him. Viewers well know that the president of the United States is Zartan in disguise, using his influence to push Cobra into the public eye and assert its dominance over the globe. If you thought the rise of Cobra meant the death of the former president, however, you'd be mistaken: The trailer reveals that the real president (played by "Pirates of the Caribbean" veteran Jonathan Pryce) is still alive, if not exactly well.

Two Cases of Thin Mints
With few allies left to turn to, Roadblock takes his surviving Joes — Flint and Lady Jaye — and teams up with the reclusive General Joe Colton, the man who started it all. The hero, played by action legend Bruce Willis, has gone from complaining about his high cholesterol to demanding Girl Scout cookies in this newest trailer. And he wonders why his blood pressure is all out of whack!

London Bridge Is Falling Down
"Rise of Cobra" saw the destruction of the Eiffel Tower. It looks like London's going to undergo a similar "everything must go" sale when "Retaliation" rolls around. What, you really thought that President Zartan wanted world peace? He and the Cobra gang are behind the massive terrorist assault on the United Kingdom, and it's going to be up to Roadblock and his pals to prevent further destruction from happening.

Ninja Wrap
So. Many. Ninjas. But never enough ninjas. There is no such thing, as Snake Eyes and Jinx battling an army of sword-wielding Cobra loyalists on the side of a mountain will surely tell you. Recently, Chu revealed that a nine- to ten-minute, dialogue-free ninja battle would occur in "Retaliation," and going by the previous trailer and this latest one, it looks like this snow-covered mountain is where it's all going down. Awesome.

What do you think of the new "G.I. Joe" trailer? Sound off in the comments below!

50 Cent, Common, Others Share New Year's Resolutions

'My New Year's resolution is to quit smoking ... it's a very dirty, filthy habit,' Travie McCoy tells us.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>Wondering what some of the biggest names in the music industry are resolving to do come 2012? Well, wonder no more. MTV News asked some of those folks just that, and they are dishing on what their New Year's resolutions are for the next 12 months. </P><P> </P><P>"Ah man, so many. So many new things to work on myself. I just got to be conscious, more conscious of myself," <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/50_cent/artist.jhtml">50 Cent</a> explained. Them Crooked Vultures make their debut with a post-Lollapalooza set.
By James Montgomery

<P>Officially, <a href="/news/articles/1617945/janes-addiction-killers-turn-up-heat-on-lollapaloozas-last-day.jhtml">Lollapalooza ended Sunday night</a> in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from <a href="/music/artist/killers_the/artist.jhtml">the Killers</a> and <a href="/music/artist/janes_addiction/artist.jhtml">Jane's Addiction</a>. Unofficially, it ended <i>very</i> early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures. </P><P> </P><P>To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of <a href="/music/artist/foo_fighters/artist.jhtml">Foo Fighters</a> frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, <a href="/music/artist/queens_stone_age/artist.jhtml">Queens of the Stone Age</a> mastermind Josh Homme and <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere. </P><P> </P><P>According to <a href="http://blogs.suntimes.com/derogatis/2009/08/them_crooked_vultures_at_metro.html" target="_blank">some reports</a>, the Vultures actually turned <i>down</i> Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town. </P><P> </P><P>Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures &#8212; Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar &#8212; ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called <i>Never Deserved the Future,</i> and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans). </P><P> </P><P>The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard &#8212; <a href="http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2009/08/concert-review-them-crooked-vultures-at-metro.html" target="_blank"><i>Chicago Tribune</i></a> critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" &#8212; delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the <i>Chicago Sun-Times'</i> Jim DeRogatis. </P><P> </P><P>It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures &#8212; there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October. </P><P> </P><P>Early Monday, a <a href="http://twitter.com/crookedvultures" target="_blank">Crooked Vultures Twitter account</a>, which had previously posted links to the band's <a href="http://www.themcrookedvultures.com/" target="_blank">official-looking Web site</a> and the Metro's online ticketing site &#8212; posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a <i>Deserve the Future</i> T-shirt. Cost: $30.</p>
